David Principe

David is a registered patent attorney with over 25 years of experience in representing and advising clients with respect to a broad range of patent, trademark and copyright matters.

David is known for delivering practical, efficient solutions based on his extensive experience in connection with handling patent and trademark matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and for efficiently resolving intellectual property disputes. His practice includes domestic and international patent and trademark prosecution; trademark oppositions and cancellations; non-infringement opinions; patent and trademark clearance opinions; and dispute resolution in all areas of intellectual property.

David has experience representing clients across the entire spectrum, including individuals, startup companies, small and medium-sized companies, research institutions and publicly-held companies. He has also represented clients across many different industries. His patent work is focused on the mechanical and electromechanical arts based on his background in mechanical engineering and experience as a project engineer in the plastics industry.

  • Represented companies in connection with designing around existing patents, including noninfringement and freedom to operate opinions.
  • Assisted in successfully representing a large manufacturer of plumbing products in the Midwest in connection with patent litigation in the Northern District of Illinois.
  • Represented companies and individuals at various stages in connection with the development and protection of medical devices.

  • Represented a broad range of clients in connection with developing both domestic and international trademark portfolios of all sizes.
  • Represented a media personality in connection with developing a trademark portfolio, resolving intellectual property disputes and assisting with licensing issues.
  • Successfully represented a manufacturer of copper-infused athletic wear in a trademark opposition proceeding before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board that went to a final decision on the merits.The client prevailed on defenses to likelihood of confusion and fraud claims.
