He’s just a few years out of law school, but Buffalo attorney John Murray has a crystal-clear vision of what he wants to accomplish in the profession: “I hope to continue to use what I learn on a day-to-day basis throughout my practice area and grow as a competent attorney who can vigorously defend the interests of our clients while remaining true to myself and my values.”
So what is it about product liability and mass tort litigation that grabbed his interest?
“On a macro level, the fact that this area of the law is constantly changing,” said Murray, an associate at Phillips Lytle LLP. “States and the federal government are grappling with ways to balance the interests of industry and environmental and human health. No easy task, but a decision that must be rooted in science and economy if it is to truly benefit the American public at large. I am excited to be part of this ongoing conversation.”
He continued: “On a micro level, the people I work with on a day-to-day basis make me want to come into work every day. Whether it is one of the administrative assistants, paralegals, fellow associates or partners, the individuals who comprise Phillips Lytle are a special bunch. I receive constant feedback from my superiors and am given the opportunity to perform substantive legal work.”
Murray, whose family and friends call him Jack, said it’s interesting to work at a law firm where the client list is international in scope.
“We provide high-quality work on sophisticated matters while providing the ‘City of Good Neighbors’ touch,” he said.
What’s some advice he would share with other young attorneys?
“You will make mistakes … lots of them. But the key is to not be discouraged and continue to put your best foot forward,” he said. “Accept any and all failures as a blessing and learn from the experiences.”
