New York – Phillips Lytle LLP Partner Richard E. Honen and Associate Ian Roberts served as judges for the National Black Law Students Association’s (NBLSA) Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition held virtually on March 16, 2022.
Teams competing in the competition wrote briefs arguing on behalf of the petitioner and respondent on issues involving interpretation of the United States Sentencing Commission guidelines. The regional and national competitions simulated an appellate oral argument proceeding and competitors were evaluated on their overall ability as an appellate advocate. The top three placing teams from each of the six regional conventions competed in the national convention in Memphis.
The NBLSA is a national organization formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of Black law students to effectuate change in the legal community.
Mr. Honen is the Venture Capital & Technology Practice Team Leader at Phillips Lytle. He focuses his practice in corporate, finance and venture capital law, as well as complex mergers and acquisitions and commercial litigation. In addition to the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition, Mr. Honen has served as a judge or mentor in numerous events throughout New York State, including the New York Business Plan Competition (NYBPC), 43 North, the New York State High School Business Plan Competition and Venture B Plan, among many others.
Mr. Roberts concentrates his practice in the area of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights. He graduated with his J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law and his B.S. from the University of Florida. While at Washington and Lee University, he served as president of the school’s Black Law Students Association and secretary of its Latin American Law Students Association.
