Globetrotter, New York State explorer, environmental attorney.

The skyscrapers of New York City are often what many people envision when someone mentions New York, but The Empire State is so much more than The Big Apple, just ask Ben Sugarman.

A member of Phillips Lytle’s Rochester office, Ben has explored a host of the state’s most magical places. He has called Binghamton and Ithaca home, the latter being where he attended law school. He has worked his way through the Finger Lakes and Thousand Islands, though he counts the Hudson Valley as his favorite place to travel, most notably Kingston. Ben notes the great hiking and small towns make every trip a rewarding visit.

Exploring close to home isn’t his only passion, however. Ben has hopped all over the globe, filling his passport with stamps from trips to the Galapagos, England, Scotland, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Israel and Guatemala. One place still on his bucket list is Japan.

Ben is part of the firm’s Environmental Law Practice Team and Energy and Renewables Industry Team, focusing his representation on land use and zoning, environmental regulation, energy regulation and telecommunications. Though he didn’t always want to be a lawyer (he initially thought of becoming an English teacher), he realized that the legal profession would offer him the opportunity for a rewarding career.

“I was at my third successive job where I noticed that the lawyers in the organization were the ones who got to handle the most interesting and challenging work,” he said.

He relishes the opportunity to learn new things and solve problems on a daily basis. A just reward for someone who says he is always striving to be challenged. Although, not entirely surprising for someone who has explored as much of the world as Ben.
